If you’re wondering why this site is called “For The Girls” – and thinking it may not be as feminist as you’d expect – here’s an explanation.

ForTheGirls.com began as a small erotica site for women, first created in 1999 by Jane. It was re-launched as a major paysite in June 2003. The domain and name was chosen from a small list of possible pre-existing sites by Ms. Naughty and Jane when we originally planned the paysite.

The idea behind the name was that we were offering porn “for the girls”, since most porn was for men. It was a way of differentiating ourselves as a porn site for women. And we liked the friendly tone of it. For us, the site was equivalent to “a night out with the girls”. We used the “girls” word as an affectionate term that women use to refer to each other. We wanted to invoke a safe space, a female-friendly area where women were welcomed by other women.

Of course, calling women “girls” can be problematic, because it can suggest immaturity or weakness. Recent feminist discussion has made that point often. On this, we acknowledge that the phrase isn’t perfect. It seemed like a good idea at the time – and that time was over a decade ago. And alas, we’re pretty much stuck with it now; this is the domain, this is the branding, this is the logo.

So if you’re feeling a bit iffy about the name “for the girls”, we hear you. Still, I’m sure you’ll understand. It’s just a little joke between us girls.
