Alternatives
They haven't been widely publicised, but there are alternatives
to disposable feminine hygiene products, and they're much
better for the environment. These alternatives include reusable
and disposable menstrual cups, made from silicon, plastic
or rubber, sea sponges and washable cloth pads. We look at
what's available.
In 1921, the first disposable cotton menstrual pads for women
appeared, replacing the washable rags that Western women had
used for decades. Kotex pads were made of absorbent cotton
enclosed in gauze, and had originally been used to treat wounded
soldiers on the battlefields of France. In the early 1930's
